I’ve been really lucky over the years to work with some great media companies, individuals, and brands on projects large and small (and weird).

If you or your brand are interested in joining this list and commissioning something cool, send me an email at ask.teenage.stepdad@gmail.com or send me a message on my CONTACT page.

SUPER DELUXE

SUPER DELUXE CHANGED MY LIFE

In 2016, somebody at the newly relaunched cutting-edge Turner Media internet offshoot discovered my then obscure meme account and asked me to come on as a contributor.

Under the social media team’s encouragement and with nearly total creative freedom I grew as both an artist and as a creative professional, eventually making hundreds of pieces of standalone static image and video content, with subjects ranging from the ludicrous to biting social and political satire, a combination that helped to establish the brand’s identity.

In 2018 Super Deluxe won the Webby Award for Best Overall Social Presence, an achievement I’m proud to have been a part of.

Sadly, later that year Super Deluxe shuttered it’s doors following yet another fucking media company merger.

R.I.P. in peace.

MEANS TV

ENTERTAINMENT FOR THE 99%

I’ve done a lot of great work for Means TV and plan to do a lot more in the future.

Self described as ‘the world’s first post-capitalist, cooperatively run streaming service,’ Means TV hopes to provide an alternative to corporate media and entertainment with unapologetic leftist content by workers, for workers.

A great team to work with, creative freedom, and I don’t have to compromise my ethics or stifle my voice.

Pretty good gig.

WILL SMITH

WESTBROOK, INC.

Westbrook, Inc. is the production company behind Hollywood superstar Will Smith and his family.

They reached out to me to do my thing and spice up and weirdify Will’s social media feeds, and I have been plenty stoked to do it.

It’s great working with Westbrook.  They communicate clearly and allow plenty of creative freedom on my end.  And at the end of the day Will Smith (THE FRESH PRINCE!) shares my work with his millions of fans.

And credits me.

ADULT SWIM

DREAMS DON’T COME TRUE UNTIL THEY DO

When Super Deluxe unexpectedly closed it’s doors I mourned the loss for a few days.

Okay, maybe a few weeks.

But it didn’t take me long to hustle a contact with the other Turner Media brand famous for being a reliable source of subversive humor for freaks and weirdos.  Turns out they were interested in making a spot for me on their social feeds, so I jumped at the chance.

To be on the social media feed of the network that brought us Eric Andre and Tim & Eric and the original U.S. run of Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace.  Damn.

Making stuff for Adult Swim is seriously a dream come true.

AJJ

MEGA GUILLOTINE 2020 music video

From Flood Magazine:

When AJJ approached me about doing the video for a song called ‘Mega Guillotine 2020’ my initial thought was, ‘Hell yeah, I get to make a brutal gore film about the overthrow of the ruling class,’ which is honestly something I’ve been thinking about since seeing Mandy in theaters.

But after listening to the song a different idea came into focus. It was pretty and optimistic! When I listened and closed my eyes I imagined an ’80s Saturday morning commercial for a Mega Guillotine toy for kids, a twisted version of a kids show, or a subverted version of ‘We Are the World.’

Collaborating with this band and being even a small part of this record is a real honor.  We live in fucked up times. I’m pissed off about it, and when I can connect with other artists who are also pissed off about it, it makes me feel less alone. I want to believe there’s a better tomorrow out there, and I know the only way we’re going to get there is together.

NOTHING

YOU WIND ME UP music video

From Juxtapoz Magazine:

Nicky first approached me about doing a video with Nothing just before they went in the studio to record Dance on the Blacktop. When the recording was done and he sent me the track for You Wind Me Up, I was struck immediately with the visuals that would ultimately become the video I made. But at first I just played it over and over. In the car, in my bedroom studio, dancing with my wife and kids. Honestly, I think I was hoping another idea would come to me, because I had no idea how I was going to pull off what I saw in my head that first listen.

Once I got out of my way the video quickly took shape and a story materialized. The van in the video became a metaphor for my bedroom studio as I chased my muse and watched the world outside my window drift further away. Artistic endeavor, while often thrilling, can also be incredibly isolating, and I think the video ended up reflecting a lot of that push and pull. Hopefully people can relate in their own way.

Eventually I met up with the band in a tiny, van-sized green room in Phoenix to record them and insert them into the piece. They were in the midst of their tour, road-weary and tired, home a memory in their rear-view mirror, but still ready to make some fucking art. It felt very fitting.

I’m grateful to have lived so closely with this song over the course of a couple months, and to have some small association with such a beautiful record. My three year old asks me to play the “space song” when we’re cruising in our (decidedly less cool) van, and that makes me smile.

THE LONELY ISLAND

for LORD DANGER

When Mike Diva (the most talented and hardest working director in the biz) was hired to oversee the production of the first live tour for comedy rap trio The Lonely Island, he reached out to me to take the reigns on the backing video for The Creep.

This was a fun challenge, creating something that added to the live performance rather than distracting from it.  I also wanted to make sure people in the shitty seats had some cool shit to look at.  I think we pulled it off.  Click through the playlist to see it in action in the live performance video.

I’ve also added a still showing some motion graphics I did for the Netflix special “The Lonely Island Presents: The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience”, another fun project Mike Diva brought me in on.  Ask your mom for her login you’d like to watch that.  It rips.

MAD MAGAZINE

I STILL CAN’T BELIEVE IT

Here’s a crazy story, and it’s totally true.

My first dream was to be an artist for MAD Magazine. My dad bought my brother and I every issue, every special, even every CRACKED growing up (including Cracked Monster Party, a personal favorite). We devoured those issues until the pages disintegrated.

MAD changed me forever, it taught me to draw, it made me laugh, but more importantly, it taught me that EVERYONE is full of shit, a lesson that has been proven correct nearly every day of the thirty plus years that have passed since.

I gave up on that dream decades ago, but somehow, on December 18th, 2019, I headed to the comic shop to pick up MAD #11, the 20 Dumbest People, Events, and Things of 2019, and I was the artist on Number 8.  I put my real name on it, the name my dad gave me, because this all started way before Teenage Stepdad.

Dreams don’t come true, except sometimes they do, I guess?! I don’t know. LMFAO

HIGH TIMES

SMOKE RESIN EVERY DAY

This was a fun one for a lot of reasons.  When High Times approached me to do three pieces for their social feeds, I decided to do it as a small series with the same actor.  Me.

A bumbling idiot middle aged dude getting high.  I don’t know why weed humor is so funny, but it is.

BONUS: I actually bought that double bubble acrylic bong just for this series, so naturally I wrote it off on my taxes.

RED BULL ESPORTS

LIKE SPORTS BUT WITH COMPUTERS

I had fun making this piece for Red Bull ESports spotlighting the Street Fighter legend Diago Umehara himself.

This was supposed to be the first of a #throwbackthursday series for Red Bull, but it never panned out.  I think I maybe expressed the desire to make fun of gamer culture one too many times.

Anyway, this cool artifact remains.  That’s just life on the ‘net, baby.

JACK LINK’S CANADA

WORKING OUT WITH SASQUATCH

In 2018 a Canadian advertising firm working with the Jack Link’s beef meat snacks brand were working on a campaign featuring hockey super star Brent Burns inserting a VHS workout tape starring their Sasquatch mascot.  So naturally they called on me to help ’em out.

By using a screenshot of my contribution this video as the Youtube thumbnail, it received over 300k more views than any of the channel’s other videos.

I was paid in human money and many dried beefs.

FLIP

THEY ASKED FOR AN APARTMENT MEME

I wish every commission could be this easy.  Not easy in terms of work put in, but easy in terms of getting absolute creative freedom to make something that people will respond to.

Flip is an actual apartment listing company, but they have a very adventurous social media strategy.  Even so, I have to give them credit for both paying me to make this and running it on their social channels.

Of course everybody loved it.

FUN FACT: The dancing goth cowboy dude tracked this piece back to me and was thrilled.  I tagged him in the post.  That was a good day cracking wise online.
